Environmental Benefits of Hybrid Cars

Some of the controversial issues that have been presented for debating over the last few years include pollution, global warming and increased dependency on non-renewable energy sources. Judging from car industries globally, it is evident that hybrid is the future of cars. This is because of the numerous environmental benefits accomplished by owning or using a hybrid vehicle.

Why Not Electric Cars?

Electric cars depend solely on electricity for functioning. Electric cars were introduced more many decades ago. A major disadvantage of electric cars is that they need frequent recharging. This means that they cannot cover long distances. Recharging needs to be done at an interval of three to six hours. This means that compared to a standard car, an electric car would not give a user enough sense of freedom.

Hybrid cars have countered the shortcomings of electric cars. They are a combination of an electric and a standard car. What propels a hybrid car is its electric motor. A standard engine comes to play when the battery begins to run low or when there is the need for additional power. Therefore, the machinery of a hybrid car is advanced. It has computers whose function is to control all the details of the propelling systems. The latest advancement idea makes it possible for hybrid cars to recharge their own batteries.

Population Health and Nature

There are obvious environmental benefits of hybrid cars. A hybrid car would release fewer emissions compared to a standard car. This is not only beneficial to nature, but also to the general population. Standard cars use fossil fuels that pollute the environment. Inhaling such emissions may cause diseases such as lung illnesses and cancer. In the atmosphere, such emissions may be converted to acid rain, which destroys crops. Therefore using a hybrid car does not only benefit nature, but it also benefits humanity.

It is essential to note that hybrid cars are not the solution to all environmental issues affecting humanity. It is undeniable that the cars are beneficial to the health of people, as well as to the environment. However, these cars will be required to obtain their electricity from some place, and this is the point where a disadvantage arises. Coal plants are the key source of most additional electricity needed for recharging the hybrid cars. The use of coal to produce electricity would obviously lead to increased environmental pollution. Because of this disadvantage, experts have asserted that prior to purchasing a hybrid car, a cost benefit analysis is fundamental.

Merits and Demerits of Owning a Hybrid Car

Makers of hybrid cars have always maintained that they are among the best inventions. While people are motivated to purchase hybrid cars for many reasons, it is essential to have an understanding of how they operate. Some of the merits and demerits of owning a hybrid car will be explored in this article.

Definition of a Hybrid Car

Generally, it is a normal care that is fuel efficient, and characterized by two motors; gasoline and electric. Another notable feature is a unique system that plays the role of capturing braking energy that can be preserved in an onboard battery.

Merits of Hybrid Cars

One of the key merits of owning a hybrid car is its high gasoline efficiency. It has been claimed that a hybrid car would get 48-60 mpg. The mean annual fuel costs for a hybrid car are less than those of a conventional car. For instance, the Honda Insight hybrid would use $405 for fuel on an annual basis, while a conventional Honda Civic would need $635. The fuel efficiency in hybrid cars is accounted for by advancements in aero dynamics, reduction in weight, as well as reduction of the size of the engine.

In addition to fuel economy, a hybrid car has several green merits. One notable observation concerning hybrid cars is the fewer emissions that they release into the atmosphere. This is especially beneficial in large cities where pollution has been reported as one of the key environmental concerns. Hybrid cars make a fundamental difference because owning them reduces the rate of pollution. Therefore, the new technology and the green image are the two major reasons behind the increase in hybrid sales.

Reliability Problem as a Demerit

One of the key demerits of owning a hybrid car is its unreliability. However, makers have channeled efforts towards offsetting this problem. They have done so by providing their customers with strong guarantees. For instance, they provide a warranty of 8-year/80,000 miles for Honda Insight. This warranty covers the powertrain, as well as the batteries. The rest of the car has a three-year warranty. For Toyota Prius, an 8-year warranty per 100,000 miles is given for the hybrid systems and the battery. The rest of the car has a 3-year warranty per 36,000 miles.

Although hybrids can save on fuel costs and promote the green campaigns, experts have asserted that the hybrid technology may be transitional. They have argued that the future cars will be methane or hydrogen-fuel powered. They recommend people to consider carefully prior to investing in a hybrid car.
